‘America’s Got Talent’: Sofia Vergara Slams Golden Buzzer for ‘Ridiculous’ Act She Says Is ‘Nonsense’

Week after week, new hopefuls hit the America’s Got Talent stage and impress the judges and the cheering audience with epic routines, and during Tuesday’s seventh week of Season 19 auditions, the acts were some of the most mesmerizing and jaw-dropping yet!

This week’s slate of performers included a young contortionist, an inspiring singer-songwriter, an acrobat duo, a talented choir, an impressive stand-up comedian and many more!

Host Terry Crews led the mind-blowing slate of auditions, which were overseen by longtime judges Howie MandelHeidi KlumSofia Vergara and Simon Cowell, who were on the lookout for some truly exceptional performers.

However, it was a very strange night indeed in many ways — not least of all because of the Golden Buzzer shenanigans.

Midway through Tuesday’s show, an Australian comedian stunned the judges when he came up to the table during his bit (which was not going very well) and slammed the Golden Buzzer for himself! Despite the slow mo shots and metallic confetti, this obviously didn’t count, but it was certainly unexpected.

However, what was equally unexpected was Vergara’s Golden Buzzer choice for the night!

The Japanese comedy duo, Schumacher, hit the stage for an almost indescribable act that saw them transforming themselves into animals through a mix of hilarious and weirdly impressive costume quick-changes and pantomime.

While all of the judges were blown away by the totally unexpected audition, the baffling quality seemed to be what drew Vergara to it in a way that she didn’t event seem to understand.

“What is it? Like, a dance or a puppet or a transformation? Quick change? I don’t know! I’m, like, very confused, because I thought it was ridiculous. It’s, like, a nonsense. I don’t know what it is,” Vergara said. “But I really, really think that you deserve this.”

She then slammed the Golden Buzzer, and left the two comic performers stunned.

“That was the most fun thing we’ve had all day, all week!” Vergara explained when asked about her decision.

“Is this a dream?” one of the comics asked in stunned awe.

“No, it’s real,” Cowell shared. “[It was] brilliant. Seriously, brilliant.”

Here’s a look at a few of the night’s other biggest, most epic performances:

Mia Soleil

Illya and Anastasiia Strakhov

The Jerusalem Youth Chorus

Jabu and Cornelio

Horse

Mervin Mayo

Insane Shayne

Aleksandr Batuev

Dian Rene

ET spoke with the judges on the AGT red carpet ahead of the season 19 audition rounds, and they opened up about why giving each of them a second Golden Buzzer is a real game changer.

“Talent is subjective. When you put a singer next to a dancer, next to a danger act, next to a magician — they each need their own buzzer!” Crews shared. “I just think it’s perfect! And I’ve said this before, AGT is consistently evolving… [and] it’s getting better every time a new evolution comes out.”

Cowell — who created AGT and also serves as an executive producer on the series — came up with the idea for the second Golden Buzzer, and explained to ET that the idea came to him when he considered “the amount of time and effort these people put into this act and where this can go.”

“People fly in from all over the world, as well as the American artists, and you are seeing the [amazing] things,” Cowell gushed about the magic of the show. “The 70 times I’ve just gone, ‘How did you come up with that idea?!’ That’s what I love about the show, you know? It continues to surprise you.”

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
