If you’ve been contemplating updating your home, then this news might spur you into action: Thumbtack and Zillow have teamed up in a recent report to share the most popular no-demolition renovations—perfect timing if you’re thinking about selling your home or just want to make your remodel worthwhile.
Using data from 3.9 million homes listed for sale on Zillow between June 2023 and May 2024 and a team of economists who looked at 265 features, Zillow and Thumbtack rounded up the top 10 no-demo renovation projects that generated the most interest from buyers. (Interest is defined as anything that’s been saved or shared on Zillow.) And since these projects are no-demo, they are all under $5,000. In fact, many are under $500! Keep reading to find out what the projects are—you might even end up adding these to your to-do list.
Window Boxes
Window boxes came in at number one on the list and goes to show that the devil is in the details. Apparently, a blooming window box makes a world of difference in the perception of a home: Zillow found that homes with window boxes see 48% more saves and 52% more shares than similar homes without.
Adding a window box can be a great DIY project, or you can leave it in the safe hands of professionals for an average of $100-$150, plus materials which can be anywhere from $15-$900. The options are endless with different materials, paints, finishes, and, of course, plants. A flower-filled window box is classic, but you might also consider adding ferns and vines or even cultivating a small herb garden.
Open Shelving
Open shelving is a huge trend right now, along with open cabinets—it provides storage while keeping your space looking open and spacious and it saves on materials. (Cabinet doors surprisingly add up!)
Homes that invest in this design feature get a hefty return with an average of 37% more saves and 45% more shares per day. Because they are so simple, open shelves are another project you can tackle yourself. If you’re not about that DIY life, professional installation averages out to be only $275 without materials.
Painted Brick
Curb appeal is crucial when you’re thinking of selling and repainting the exterior of your house is an easy way to give it a makeover. Vintage Touches and Finishes
Vintage and antique accents in a home can leave a huge (positive!) impression on buyers, so it’s worth scouting estate sales for precious pieces. The price of vintage decor can vary dramatically, but if you are dedicated enough you can find incredible treasures on places like Facebook Marketplace for a fraction of what they should be, or even free.
Architectural features like crown moldings, which can cost as little as $2 per foot, give your home historical charm and hide imperfections. These small tweaks can get your home a lot of attention, with an average increase of 28% more saves and 31% more shares.
Outdoor TV
Outdoor areas are becoming extensions of our indoor spaces, and the proof is in the rise of outdoor TVs. According to Zillow, homes with an outdoors TV get 28% more saves and 26% more shares, and Thumbtack’s data says that the average cost of installation is only $175-$300, though costs vary based on electrical capabilities and weatherproofing needs.
Picket Fence
The classic picket fence is always a solid choice if you’re looking to enhance your home’s curb appeal—there’s something heartwarming and nostalgic about them. And Zillow confirms how strongly we all resonate with them: Homes receive an average of 27% more saves and 31% more shares than homes without a picket fence, and 39% of homeowners picture their dream yard fenced-in for pets.
Pergola
A pergola is a structure that partially shades a part of your yard, usually over a seating area, making it especially perfect for scorching summer days. According to Zillow’s data, potential buyers appreciate this added sun and rain protection, as homes with a pergola get 20% more saves and 24% more shares than homes without. In addition, there are a ton of different styles and materials to choose from, so you have the freedom to create a unique aesthetic for your backyard.
Fire Pit
Fire pits have been trending in outdoor spaces for a few years now, and Zillow’s data backs that up: Homes with fire pits get 19% more saves and 23% more shares. You can DIY it or hire a pro—either way, it’ll still be a cheaper option than a larger-scale backyard refresh. According to Thumbtack, the average national cost is a couple hundred dollars depending on the kit purchased.
Outdoor Sound System
A sound system is a brilliant addition to an outdoor space if you like to entertain. And even better: Surround sound music is a swanky feature that can really set your house apart. Homes with this feature see 18% more saves and 19% more shares on average. Installation costs vary, as the national average is $500-$2000. Thumbtack recommends bundling this upgrade with an outdoor TV since the same professional can set these both up.
Smart Lighting
Zillow is seeing 18% more saves and 23% more shares on homes with smart lighting like smart bulbs and switches. The average installation cost is only $308 so many homeowners are catching on: Smart home installation is up almost 22% each year, according to Thumbtack data. If that doesn’t convince you to invest in tech: Smart home upgrades, like solar-powered lighting, can help you save on energy bills.
