2 Parents Killed After Boats Collide, 1 Victim Trapped Under Capsized Vessel

A boating collision in Louisiana has left two parents dead.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries responded to a call about a two-vessel collision in the Tickfaw River near Kings Point shortly after midnight on Sunday, July 28.

According to a news release, agents “found a heavily damaged 25-foot pontoon boat and a capsized 25-foot Sea Fox boat” upon their arrival.

One of the passengers on the Sea Fox boat, Springfield, La., native Thuy Gustin, 31, was trapped under the capsized vessel, causing an agent and a Good Samaritan to jump in the water to save her.

The agent and the Good Samaritan performed CPR on Gustin until an ambulance arrived. She was then transported to the North Oaks Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Springfield Fire Department then began searching for Greensburg, La., native Chase Sharkey, 36, who was operating the pontoon boat. His body was recovered “around 12:45 p.m.,” per the press release.

According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Sea Fox had six people on board, and the pontoon boat had seven people on board.

Three people on the Sea Fox and three people on the pontoon were taken to the North Oaks Hospital with serious injuries that are “believed to be non-life threatening.”

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said that blood was drawn from the Sea Fox’s driver. They also noted that no one was wearing a life jacket at the time of the collision. PEOPLE reached out to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for comment.

A GoFundMe created after Gustin’s death remembered her as a “beautiful person inside and out” who was “the light and love” of those around her.

The mother of two was also remembered as a “great mother” who had an “outgoing spirit [and] kindness.”

The GoFundMe, set up to raise donations for Gustin’s funeral expenses, has accumulated over 150 donations and raised over $16,000 of its $25,000 goal so far.

A MealTrain has been set up for Sharkey’s family, which includes four children, per WVUE-DT. The campaign’s meal calendar has been filled with encouraging messages for his family.
