Disney Channel die-hards will never forget when Miley Cyrus‘s Hannah Montana had a mashup with Selena Gomez and the Wizards of Waverly Place crew with the epic crossover Wizards On Deck With Hannah Montana. However, upon closer reflection, fans will probably realize that Cyrus and Gomez shared zero screen time together. According to a co-star, there was a little bit of behind-the-scenes beef involving teenage love and a Jonas Brother.
During today’s episode of “Wizards of Waverly Pod,” WoWP‘s Jennifer Stone (she played bestie Harper Finkle) revealed that the two stars were involved in “messy high school nonsense” and that she could feel the tension between them immediately—and it was all because of Nick Jonas.
“I think Miley dated him first and then Selena dated him, and then it was it was just messy high school nonsense,” she said to her co-host, David DeLuise. “I know they were intermittently not getting along.”
Cyrus and Nick dated in 2006, but they broke up a year later. After that, Jonas and Gomez linked up in 2008 and the two maintained an on-again, off-again relationship until 2010, according to Entertainment Weekly. Cyrus collaborated with the Jonas Brothers on the track “Before the Storm” and her time with Nick reportedly inspired her song “7 Things.”
“They’re fine now,” Stone added. “But, yeah, it was high school…just BS.”

In 2016, Gomez addressed the rumored conflict during an interview with W, saying, “We never feuded. We both liked the same guy when we were 16. It was just a Hilary Duff–Lindsay Lohan thing: ‘Oh, my God, we like the same boy!’ We are now completely settled in our own lives.”
Bustle reports that the two are closer now than when they were children. In 2020, Gomez appeared on Cyrus’ Instagram Live talk show, Bright Minded, where she revealed her bipolar disorder diagnosis.

“It was very sweet because you just sent a butterfly emoji,” Cyrus said of their reconnection through Instagram. “And that’s enough, connecting with people and letting them know that you’re there.” Miley even attended Gomez’s birthday party in 2022 and they celebrated releasing new music on the same day in 2023, with “Used to Be Young” and “Single Soon” both dropping on August 25.
“@mileycyrus and I both have a SINGLE SOON and we are releasing on the same day,” Gomez wrote on her Instagram Story at the time. “We have been friends since we USED TO BE YOUNG.”
Cyrus also posted on her Story, writing, “@selenagomez and I are both dropping our SINGLEs SOON…..I SAY WE #USEDTOBEYOUNG.”
