If there’s one accessory we often relegate to the back of our closets, it’s belts. Sure, they serve a purpose, but when it comes to fashion-forward styling, it’s not one that’s top of mind. But if Cate Blanchett’s latest look is any indication, we’re about to transition from brat summer to belt fall.
On August 5, the Australian actress stepped out in New York City wearing a blue suede jacket and pants, paired with ’70s-style black eyeglasses and brown pump heels. The pièce de résistance in the outfit, though, was a brown belt with heart-shaped wooden buckle, giving the retro-inspired look an even more nostalgic appeal.

Turns out, Blanchett is ahead of the curve, as thick, sculptural belts are poised to be one of the fall’s biggest trends. Over the past year, brands like Schiaparelli, Prada, Khaite, and Miu Miu have bet big on belts as their hero accessory, while street style stars have made double-belt styling and statement belts some of their must-haves.

Other celebrities have endorsed the trend lately, too. Gigi Hadid appeared at the premiere of Deadpool and Wolverine wearing a yellow mustard Miu Miu skirt paired with a brown suede thick belt, while Emma Corin wore a Saint Laurent garter mini dress paired with a brown leather belt.

It seems that, when it comes to transitional dressing (here’s looking to cooler days head!), it’s better to cinch it. Ahead, some belt options to get on the trend before the leaves fall.
