A Celebrity Stylist Told Me What L.A. Cool Girls Are Wearing Right Now

As a fashion writer in New York City, I’m constantly inspired by the looks of those around me; I spend my commutes dissecting the outfits of stylish strangers and taking mental notes for my own shopping wishlists (in the least creepy way, of course). Though the city often feels like my Pinterest board’s personification, there are times when my everyday looks could use a little zhuzh—that’s when I turn to the West Coast. To close out the summer in style, I tapped L.A.-based celebrity stylist and fashion editor Vanessa Powell to spill the top five trends Cali It girls are wearing right now. 

Powell spilled her juicy fashion findings, along with a few Amazon picks to nail the cool California look. Stylist-Approved L.A. Summer Trends

Bermuda Jorts

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, denim bermuda shorts are in this summer—and as Powell says, “the baggier and longer the better.” The stylist advises sporting the divisive bottoms with a fitted ribbed tank for an “easy, no-fuss outfit formula that feels effortless yet cool.” Considering the trend errs on the masculine side, Powell sources hers “straight from the men’s section” and styles them with structured pieces and “feminine accents like kitten heels and a blazer.” Don’t worry, we’re not leaving jorts behind next season; Powell recommends styling the bottoms with tall boots and a fitted cardigan for fall. 

Statement Jewelry

It’s no secret that every great outfit needs an even better accessory, but statement jewelry is having a major moment right now; notably, sea-inspired motifs are dominating, per Powell. Though mermaid-esque jewels are a natural nod to summertime, Powell predicts the trend will transition into fall with “a wave (no pun intended) of 80s-style jewelry.” She says we’ll be seeing “shell statement earrings and conch shell rope pendants,” but “think less mother of pearl and enamel,” and opt for “more gold, plus darker beads like onyx and malachite.” 

Pleated Mini Skirts

Pleated skirts are a style staple, but this season Powell recommends leaning away from “athletic and flowy silhouettes” and opting for “more structured materials” such as “denim, cotton gabardine (like khaki and trousers), and even corduroy.” She noted that pleated minis are “great transition pieces,” considering their durable structures already feel “fall-like.” To further “fall-ify” the look, Powell plans to pair her preppy skirts with tall boots and chunky knitwear—just add sheer tights if you’re an East Coaster, like me. 

Breezy Boxer Shorts

I’d wear my pajamas everywhere if I could, so I’m all-in on the comfy boxer short trend. Powell said all the hottest celebs have been spotted in “off-duty crisp, cotton poplin boxer shorts.” Plus, luxury brands including Ganni, Staud, Doen, Comme Si, among others have embraced the effortless bottoms. If you haven’t had a chance to pick up a breezy pair this summer, it’s not too late; Powell noted that the unexpected shorts will surely transition into fall “following suit of the ‘no pants trend’ when paired with a blazer and loafers.” 

Satin Scarves

If you’re looking to spice up your wardrobe beyond classic accessories, get your hands on a satin scarf this season. Powell says L.A. trendsetters are styling them in their hair, layered under Western hats, or over caps to “spice up the most basic looks.” Come fall, the stylist predicts everyone will transition into wearing deep-toned scarves as chic neckties and hair accessories. As Powell put it, the effortless accessory will instantly deliver an “Audrey Hepburn classic look.”
