Chet Hanks Recalls ‘3-Day Coke Binge,’ Celebrates 2 Years Sober

Chet Hanks is celebrating the progress he’s made in his sobriety journey.

During the Tuesday, Aug. 13 episode of The Surreal Life, the 34-year-old son of actors Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks shared that his mother texted and reminded him that he’s now two years sober.

“This is my sobriety anniversary,” he said, showing off his Twelve Steps app tracker.

R&B singer and costar Macy Gray added in a confessional, “As much as he comes on as he’s this cool guy, I think every day is a big deal for him to keep it together.”

The entire cast then gathered at the table to celebrate Chet’s milestone, asking him how he was able to get this far.

“Two years ago today, I was coming off a three-day coke binge where I didn’t eat, sleep or barely drink any water for three days straight,” he recalled. “When I got to Vegas, I weighed 190 lbs. At the end of it, I weighed 163,” he continued. “I lost 27 lbs in three days, so my disease is gnarly. It’s not pretty. I went straight from Vegas, checked myself into rehab… again.”

“Here I am, 31 years old, broke, strung out, sucked up, just skinny, just at rock bottom,” he continued. “I just knew, man, if I don’t change my life in a drastic way, either I’m not even going to be around or something bad, so bad, is going to happen that my life might as well be over.”

Chet said that he was able to do the work and get clean. Now after two years, he’s “having the time of my f—— life,” he boasted.

“Life is good. God is great. That’s all I gotta say,” he added.

The rapper and actor said that sharing the milestone with his costars felt good because everyone was able to get to know him better, calling them a family.

“They were all there to celebrate and support me being sober which really touches me,” he said.

Chet spoke to PEOPLE in July about his sobriety and how beneficial it’s been for him, especially as he continues his acting career with his new show Running Point. He admitted that none of his current joy would be possible without getting clean.

“One hundred percent,” he said of being sober. “None of this would be possible without sobriety.”

“It’s not difficult at all,” he continued. “What’s difficult is when you’re trying to manage your life and you’re not sober, that’s what’s difficult. When you just commit and decide and you stick to it, it’s not even something that you negotiate with. It’s just a non-negotiable. And life becomes extremely easy.”
