Kim Kardashian Makes a Case For the Y2K “Going Out Top”

The year I turned 10, I saw a movie that would change my life forever. The movie was Bend It Like Beckham. And, no, I was not inspired to take up soccer. I was, however, determined to one day own a going out top to rival Keira Knightley’s shimmery, slinky party top from that clubbing scene.

I don’t pretend to have a lot in common with business mogul and reality star Kim Kardashian, but one thing we do apparently share is a fondness for a good, old-fashioned Y2K going out top.

In a new Instagram post, Kardashian shared images from a “sunset sail” in which she sported what can only be referred to as the ultimate going out top. The gray backless top featured a halter-neck, a plunging scooped neck that drooped to her belly button and an itty bitty strap at the back holding it all together. She paired the barely there top with capri leggings (another blast from the not-so-distant Y2K past) and a pair of heeled sandals, which she casually kicked off for her nautical photoshoot. This entire outfit is simply begging to be taken out for a spin under some strobe lights as Melanie C’s “I Turn To You” blasts out at full volume.

Kardashian is always up for resurrecting iconic Y2K styles. Just a few days ago, she wore a white latex column dress with a bold plunging neckline. In April, she donned a white bandage dress that instantly gave us flashbacks to early 2000s Hervé Léger. Then, of course, there was her Victoria Beckham-coded black leather ski suit from January of this year.

Of all of the Y2K looks making the rounds in 2024, the sexy backless going out top is one I welcome back with open arms. After all, no dress code beats the going out top, jeans and heels combo. Ladies, Kim K has spoken—we are going out out like it’s 2002.
