Kate Middleton and Prince William‘s fairy-tale romance just keeps getting cuter. While royal fans likely know just about everything about the duo’s love story (and anyone unfamiliar can catch up with a quick binge of Netflix’s The Crown), royal author Robert Jobson shares some new fun facts in his new book, Catherine, the Princess of Wales.
“Among the student community, it was an open secret that they were a couple,” Jobson wrote of Kate and William’s early days, which go back to their time at St Andrews. While they met in 2001, they didn’t start dating right away, but when they started spending a lot of time together, people assumed that there was more to the friendship between the prince and Kate.
One of William’s exes revealed that Kate and William actually spilled that they were an item during a game night.
“A revealing moment occurred during a dinner party with friends attended by Carly Massy-Birch,” Jobson explained, noting that everyone was playing a game of Never Have I Ever when “perhaps unwittingly, Carly exposed William’s secret love affair with Catherine, much to the prince’s chagrin.”
Fellow royal expert Katie Nicholl also wrote about the incident in her book The Making of a Royal Romance. A source shared that when it was Massy-Birch’s turn, “She announced, ‘I’ve never dated two people in this room,’ knowing full well that William was the only one who had, because Kate was sitting next to him.”
The guest went on to say that the revelers were “in shock” by the move and that William “shot a thunderous look” at her and whispered, “I can’t believe you just said that.”
“We knew they were together, but it was the first time William confirmed his and Kate’s relationship in public,” the source finished.
Back in 2010, right after William and Kate announced their engagement, he opened up to ITV about their time living together as roommates and the initial stages of their romance, saying, “We moved in together as friends. We lived with a couple of others, as well, and it just sort of blossomed from there, really. We just saw more of each other, hung out a bit more, and did stuff.”
