ABP News is a popular Hindi News channel, first signed on the air as STAR News on February 18, 1998, and was owned by a joint enterprise between News Corporation having possession of STAR TV/ Fox International Channels. The service was formerly known as STAR News before ABP Group being purchased by ABP Group. STAR News was premiered on February 18, 1998. STAR News was first bilingual (Hindi and English) news channel. It was primarily owned and operated by STAR India with NDTV doing the production until 2003. The channel was transformed into a complete Hindi language news channel when the contract with NDTV terminated in the year 2003.
The government of India initiated the law for foreign equality in the news industry to 26%, the STAR News then signed a joint project with Ananda Bazar Patrika group to shape a corporation called Media Content and Communications Services Pvt. Ltd. (MCCS). MCCS ran the channel STAR News with 74% partnership in this joint Venture while rest was owned by STAR News itself.
Ananda Bazar Patrika (ABP) group proclaimed that this shared agreement would part ways. The eight years affiliation with the brand name STAR came to an end. MCCS; Media Content and Communications Services, said after the split, Hindi News channel would be branded as ABP News. Marathi news channel STAR Majha would be named as ABP Majha. Bengali language version STAR Ananda would take name ABP Ananda. The Punjabi News channel called ABP Sanjha was introduced for Nothern Punjabi viewers. On January 1, 2016, ABP Asmita was launched as a Gujarati language news channel.
