The Delhi Police on Friday filed an FIR against self-styled godman Daati Maharaj, who was earlier charge-sheeted in a rape case, for flouting lockdown guidelines by organising a huge religious congregation on Friday. The Delhi Police has filed an FIR against Daati Maharaj and his aides.

Late night on Friday, Daati Maharaj, his supporters and hundreds of others gathered at Shani Dhaam temple in south Delhi’s Asola to perform a ceremony. Videos and pictures of the self-styled godman violating lockdown guidelines have gone viral on social media.

“During the preliminary enquiry, we found that the Daati Maharaj, along with some others, had performed a ceremony at the temple on May 22 at around 7:30 pm. They violated the government guidelines on lockdown,” Delhi Police said.

Daati Maharaj and others seen in videos have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 3 of Epidemic Diseases Act.

The controversial self-styled godman has been accused of sexual assault by a former student of a school run by him. In 2018, a disciple had accused Daati Maharaj of raping her at his ashram in Delhi.

According to the complainant, she was raped in 2016 when she had gone to Daati Maharaj’s ashram, in South Delhi’s Fatehpur area, popularly known as Ashram Shri Shanti Tirth Kshetra.

In October 2018, Daati Maharaj was booked by the CBI in the rape case.
