Sky News Arabia (سكاي نيوز عربية) the Arabic 24-hour Arabic news service of Sky operating in MENA. Launched on May 6, 2012, the service owned by Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan is a JV between UK based Sky and Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corporation (ADMIC). The owner Nahyan is a member of Abu Dhabi Emirate ruling family. It is headquartered in Abu Dhabi’s twofour54 media with a network of bureaus spread across Middle East and North Africa. The Arabic news service also has wider access to a number of Sky’s international bureaus for its news operations while also having offices in London and Washington, D.C. News Horizon is the catchphrase of the channel.

History

On Nov 29, 2010, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan and BSkyB for the first time made their partnership public while announcing to jointly establish an Arabic language all-news format free-to-air station. Head of international news, Adrian Wells was brought to lead the upstart network. Nart Bouran in Feb 2011 was staffed as maiden director news at Sky Arabia; he would previously serve at Reuters as director of television. Yasser Thabet from Al Arabiya came in for the post of director output in June 2011 while Nicholas Love was recruited as director of finance of the newly built news organization.

In Sep 2011, Al-Waleed bin Talal of Saudi royal family who was the second largest holder of stake in 21st Century Fox which in turn held a 39.1% stake in BSkyB announced that he would launch his Arabic news service, Alarab News Channel. However, the station became silent on the same day it signed on air.

Sky Arabia became operational at the network’s headquarters in twofour54 in Feb 2012 and began its broadcasts formally on May 6, 2012. The service launched 90.3 FM on Nov 8, 2015; the dial was previously used by BBC News Arabic.

Programming

The all-news channel broadcasts general news, weather updates, sports stories, traffic reports, stock and commodities updates and debate and analysis programming. Specialized content is also included in the daily lineups.

Sky News Arabia strives to be non-partisan Arabic news source managed by a six-member editorial advisory committee that takes care of editorial output.

Reach

The channel is available to 50m plus households in Middle East and North Africa via satellite and cable subscriptions. It can also be accessed via internet and mobile apps. Nilesat 201, Hot Bird, Astra and Arabsat contribute to the free-to-air transmission of the service. The broadcaster is available in US, South America, New Zealand, Australia and Canada via myTV. In United Kingdom and Ireland viewers can have the station using Sky channel 758.
